Burping is holding a baby upright and gently patting or rubbing their back to help them bring up air swallowed during feeding. Not every baby burps after every feed, and that is fine.
What you can do
- Try three positions: upright over your shoulder, sitting on your lap with chin supported, or lying tummy-down across your lap.
- Burp bottle-fed babies every 60-90 ml or so, and breastfed babies when they switch sides.
- Keep a cloth handy, as a little milk often comes up with the wind.
Frequently asked questions
If they seem comfortable after a few minutes, you can stop; some babies swallow very little air.
