Diaper (nappy) rash is red, sore or irritated skin in the nappy area, caused mainly by prolonged contact with wee and poo and by rubbing. It is very common and usually clears within a few days with good care.
What you can do
- Change wet or dirty nappies as soon as possible.
- Clean the skin gently with water or fragrance-free wipes and pat dry.
- Leave the nappy off for a while each day.
- Apply a thin layer of barrier cream.
When to talk to your doctor
See your doctor or pharmacist if the rash does not improve after a few days, has bright red spots spreading into the skin folds (possible thrush), blisters, or comes with fever.
