Early rising is when a baby or toddler regularly starts the day much earlier than the family would like, for example before 5 or 6 am. Morning light, noise, bedtime and nap timing are common factors.
What you can do
- Use blackout blinds to block early light.
- Keep morning feeds and contact dark and quiet until your chosen wake time.
- Review bedtime and nap times; a much too early or too late bedtime can both cause early waking.
- Make getting up a clear routine at a consistent time.
Frequently asked questions
Not always; overtired babies sometimes wake even earlier. Change bedtime gradually.
