Gas pain is discomfort from air trapped in a baby's digestive system. Babies swallow air while feeding and crying, and most gas is normal and harmless, even if it makes them grunt, squirm or seem uncomfortable.
What you can do
- Burp your baby during and after feeds.
- Check the latch or bottle teat so less air is swallowed.
- Try gentle bicycle leg movements or tummy massage.
- Give supervised tummy time.
When to talk to your doctor
See your doctor if your baby has a swollen, hard tummy, is vomiting, has blood in their poo, has a fever, or cries in a way that cannot be soothed.
