Mastitis is inflammation of breast tissue, most common during breastfeeding, that causes a painful, swollen and sometimes red area of the breast and can come with flu-like symptoms such as fever and chills. It may or may not involve an infection.

Key takeaways

  • Keep breastfeeding; it helps and is not harmful to your baby.
  • Rest, fluids and pain relief help most cases.
  • Antibiotics may be needed if it does not improve.

What you can do

  • Keep feeding or expressing from the affected side.
  • Use a warm cloth before feeds or a cold compress for pain.
  • Wear loose clothing and avoid tight bras.
  • Do not massage the breast firmly.

When to talk to your doctor

See your doctor if symptoms have not improved 12 to 24 hours after self-care, if you feel very unwell, or if there is a hard, painful lump that does not go away.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. You can keep breastfeeding, and it helps clear the blockage.
