Meconium is a newborn's first poo: dark green to black, thick and sticky. It is made of material the baby swallowed in the womb and is usually passed within the first 24 hours after birth.

Key takeaways

  • Stools change to greenish-brown, then yellow, over the first days of feeding.
  • Changing stools are a sign that feeding is going well.

When to talk to your doctor

Tell your doctor or midwife if your baby has not passed meconium within 48 hours of birth, or if they have a swollen tummy or green vomit.
