Open-ended play is play with materials that have no single correct use or outcome, such as blocks, boxes, fabric, sand or water. The child decides what to do, which puts imagination, creativity and problem-solving first.

What you can do

  • Offer simple everyday items: cardboard boxes, pots, scarves and blocks.
  • Give your child time to play without a set goal.
  • Join in with curiosity instead of instructions.
