The pincer grasp is the ability to pick up small objects between the tips of the thumb and index finger. It usually develops between about 9 and 12 months; the CDC lists picking things up between thumb and pointer finger as a milestone by 1 year.

What you can do

  • Offer soft, small finger foods, such as peas or pieces of banana.
  • Keep small non-food items, coins and button batteries out of reach.
