Postpartum (postnatal) depression is depression that develops after having a baby, causing persistent low mood, loss of interest, anxiety or difficulty bonding. It can start any time in the first year, can affect fathers and partners too, and is treatable.

Key takeaways

  • It lasts longer and is more intense than the baby blues.
  • It is not a sign of weakness or bad parenting.
  • Talking therapies, support and sometimes medicine are effective.

What are the signs?

Common signs include persistent sadness, losing interest in things, feeling hopeless or guilty, anxiety, irritability, trouble sleeping even when the baby sleeps, difficulty concentrating and trouble bonding with the baby.

When to talk to your doctor

Talk to your doctor, midwife or health visitor if you have some of these signs for more than two weeks. Get urgent help, including by calling your local emergency number, if you have thoughts of harming yourself or your baby.
