Sensory play is play that engages the senses, such as touch, sight, sound and smell, using materials like water, sand, dough, fabric or food. Messy, hands-on play helps young children explore, build fine motor skills and learn new words.

What you can do

  • For babies, use safe, edible materials like yoghurt or cooked pasta.
  • Avoid small parts and choking hazards, and always supervise.
  • Name the textures: soft, sticky, cold, bumpy.
