Torticollis, or wry neck, is when tight neck muscles make a baby tilt their head to one side and turn their chin to the other. In babies it is usually present from birth (congenital muscular torticollis) and often improves with stretching exercises.

Key takeaways

  • It is often linked to the baby's position in the womb.
  • It can cause a flat spot on the head.
  • Early physiotherapy usually works well.

What you can do

  • Encourage your baby to look to the side they turn less, using toys and your voice.
  • Do the stretches your doctor or physiotherapist shows you.

When to talk to your doctor

See your doctor if your baby always tilts or turns their head the same way, has a lump in the neck, or develops a flat area on the head.
