A vocabulary spurt is a period when the number of words a toddler uses increases rapidly, often after they reach around 50 words, usually somewhere between 18 and 24 months. Not every child has a clear spurt; some build vocabulary more steadily.
What you can do
- Name things your child points to or shows interest in.
- Repeat new words in different situations.
- Answer "What's that?" questions patiently.
When to talk to your doctor
Talk to your doctor if your child has fewer than about 50 words or is not combining words by 2 years.
